Joint Account

 

An account established for two or three people, owned jointly.

 

Joint Tenants with Rights of Survivorship

 

When two ore more people maintain a joint account with a brokerage firm or a bank, it is normally agreed that, upon the death of one account holder, ownership of the account assets passes to the remaining account holders. This transfer escapes probate, but estate taxes may be due, subject to the amount of assets transferred.
